Why do chimpanzees throw their feces?

Going to the zoo can sometimes be heartbreaking. This is because feces may fly in front of you at the wrong time. The culprits for these things are chimpanzees, who are very close to us humans, and they are known for throwing feces at visitors in the face. What is the reason behind this behavior?

More importantly, if they were the target of such a shooting, would they consider themselves lucky?

Anthropologist Karen Strier of the University of Wisconsin-Madison told Livescience that wild predators are not used to throwing feces. This is a common behavior among captive chimpanzees.
